Baicalein (BE) is a flavonoid isolated from Scutellaria radix roots. Previous studies have already demonstrated that BE has various pharmacological effects on the brain, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, that contribute to its neuroprotective properties.
The brains of patients suffering from central nervous system (CNS) neurodegenerative diseases show extensive signs of oxidative stress and neuro-inflammation. It has thus been hypothesized that BE could be a potential treatment option for CNS neurodegenerative diseases due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. However, the application of BE in CNS neurodegenerative disease treatment has been hampered due to its poor solubility and low oral bioavailability.
This study sought to create a new treatment mechanism for BE by encapsulating it into poly (ethylene glycol)-block-poly (D, L-lactide) micelles (BE-MC) and administering it via nasal inhalation to enhance its distribution in the brain. Results indicated that BE-MC showed comparable in-vitro antioxidant activity to BE solution without causing death of healthy cells, suggesting that nasal administration of BE-MC could be a useful treatment of CNS neurodegenerative diseases.
