Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) causes serious and sometimes fatal symptoms like diarrhea and pseudomembraneous colitis. Although antibiotics for CDI exist, they are either expensive or cause recurrence of the infection due to their altering the colonic microbiota which is necessary to suppress the infection. The findings from this study highlight the importance of developing therapy that can presumably target the Clostridial membrane to not only reduce the deleterious impact on the gut microbiota but the likelihood of recurrence in the host as well. Sheep red blood cells (Innovative Research, Novi, MI, USA) were washed three times with PBS pH 7.4. A 3% cell suspension in PBS (100 μL) was added to 11 in PBS (100 μL) to create a concentration range of 0.625 – 80 μM and then incubated at 37°C for 1 h. The plate was centrifuged at 500 × g for 10 min and supernatants (100 μL) were transferred to a clean 96-well plate.
