Exsanguination, or severe blood loss, is one of the leading causes of death following traumatic injury. The body naturally tries to prevent this via the process of hemostasis, or coagulation of the blood. Unfortunately, the natural coagulation sometimes is not enough to fully address an injury, thus there is a need for safe and effective synthetic hemostatic agents in the medical fields.
There are currently coagulants available for use on the market, however many of them are derived from biological sources and therefore pose the threat of causing an allergic reaction in the patient. This study tested the potential of a synthetic self-assembling peptide solution as a novel hemostatic agent. It was found that this solution induced coagulation immediately upon contact with blood, and the rate of coagulation rapidly increased over time.
